GY6 Clutch

The GY6 clutch is comprised of two springs, the main spring also called contra spring and the three smaller springs that actually press the clutch pads to the bell to start the wheels turning.

Main Contra Spring

The most popular main (contra) spring is 1500 rpms. Stock clutches are usually provided GoldClutchRearwith a 1000 rpm main spring. The 1500 rpm spring increases the tension on the belt. This keeps the transmission from up shifting too quickly and keeps the belt from slipping. The 1500 rpm spring increases acceleration smoothly, providing low end torque. It also helps to provide idea back shifting, which is the amount of time it takes the transmission to down shift when engine RPMs drop.

How back shifting works? As an example, when your slowing down for a turn the engine RPMs drop, but then coming out of a corner you increase throttle and need a lower gear to pick up speed. This is where back shifting is noticed. The 1500 rpm main clutch spring helps the transmission down shift to the lower gear ratio.

The Three Clutch Springs

The clutch is comprised of three arms that spread against the clutch bell to provide engine power to the wheels. The stock clutch is typically provided with 1000 rpm springs. This means that when the engine reaches 1000 rpms, the clutch will grab and begin to launch. Unfortunately, 1000 rpm springs engage too quickly for most performance applications as the engine has not provided much power at that low of rpms.

Performance Clutches

Typically provided with 1500 to 2000 springs. These springs act like a stall converter in a car allowing the rpms to increase more before the clutch engages and launches the vehicle. This gives more power at take off as the rpms are at a higher power range. Another thought is that it is like on a standard 4 speed vehicle, you press the clutch down longer as you raise the engine rpms for a much more powerful launch. This stall should not be confused as clutch slipping. It is a stall not a slip in order to give the mentioned extra power at take off.

Most people prefer the 2000 springs with a 1500 main spring for best performance. However, the great thing is that with any clutch you choose, you can fine tune it by changing out the clutch springs or the main spring to your liking. When compared to large name brand parts, GY6 parts are super inexpensive in comparison, allowing for you to afford trial and error for that ideal setup for your driving needs.

When choosing clutches, we offer both FP1 and also Koso. Both are awesome performing clutches with about 1/3rd more grabbing material over stock. We mostly carry the clutch with 2000 springs, but you can change the springs out to your own rpm needs fairly easily.
